Brake parts manufacturer quality

Beitrag von ZsZ »

Hi All!

I have read some threads here about bad quality brake parts from big brands especially bad quality drums. I will have to do a full brake job before the next HU, so I need some input on the qality of the parts which are usable and which to avoid as all should be good quality from the list below.

I can get parts locally from these brands, listed by the prices from cheap to expensive:

Discs:
BOSCH, MEYLE, FEBI, TEXTAR, DELPHI, FERODO, TRW, BREMBO, ATE, TEXTAR.

Pads:
LPR, VALEO, DELPHI, TEXTAR, FEBI, FERODO, BOSCH, TRW, TEXTAR, BREMBO

Drums:
LPR, FEBI, MEYLE, ATE, BREMBO

Shoes:
MEYLE, LPR, BREMBO, TRW, FERODO, ATE, ZIMMERMANN, BOSCH

Prices are not far from each other, but of course I want the most value for my money.

A few years ago I have bought TRW pads and shoes as there was a big discount on them. They were working well, but wore down relatively quick.

Thanks for the input!
Cheers from Hungary!

Hallo Zoltan,
if you follow the internet you will most time only read about bad experience with quality. Good quality will not be commented as expected normal.

And how many kilometers do you mean with:
They were working well, but wore down relatively quick.

Hi Joachim,

I know only the bad goes to the internet. But the parts quality nowadays are not consistent. That is why I asking for recent experiences with brands.
I have read here that even ATE and Zimmermann drums are pulsing and I saw some articles about Brembo pads falling apart in a few hundred kms.

I have the TRW front pads since 2016 rear shoes since 2017. That is ~50.000 and 40.000 kms. They are well below 50% now
I think they brake better than the previous ones. I would use them again for sure.

The previous ones were put on in 2008 together with the disc and the drums.
I have found some old pics where I can see the disc was made by AP (now called AP racing and owned by Brembo) but could not read the pad manufacturer of the shoe, I just see a red box with black bottom and a white oval logo. :) I have no photo of the rears. Those AP disc were really good as they are just around the wear limit after 13 years and over 150tkms but I could not buy them now.
I had replaced the rear shoes between 2008 and 2017 due a leaking cylinder. At those days I used the van more often, around 20tkms/year.

A live time about 40 000 km to 50 000 km is good enough. As you tell your disks are at the wear limit at about 150 000 km. Diskbrakes lifetime are usually calculatet wih 3 to 4 times pads on one disk. Lifetime depends a lot to your style of driving and the weight of your vehicle.
Former disk pads containing asbestos had a longer lifetime, but they are no longer legal as sparepart since many years.

My opinion to your drums - first meassure the inner diametre. If it is less than 253.5 mm them reuse them. Then you know, that they are not pulsing. And the brake shoes have a thicknes of 6 mm new. If they have nore than 3.5 let them in. They will last further more 10 thousands of km.

I see. Better to postpone the change until it is really necessary.
Is the quality situation this bad?

For the rear brakes, get some brake cylinders as well, they are nearly always shot after a few years. Either rubber disintegrates or the pistons rust in the cylinder. I have used three sets of rear cylinders to wear down one set of brake shoes, over 15 years and 150 000 km
