Shift-linkage central bushing (early diesel)
Hi Friends...
I now have my fuel tank out, and it is a happy time to replace the mysteriously hidden central bushings that never see the light of day .
The only problem, is that in the Czech Rep. these bushings also never see the light of day in the VW auto supply stores! ...they are all NOT AVAILABLE!
Do you guys know if these are available in Germany somewhere. I should replace all 3 of them. Here is a pic of my linkage.

Re: Shift-linkage central bushing (early diesel)
It is a bushing made from plastic. You can mill it from teflon or PE.
You can see it as pos. 22 on this scheme: http://catalog.partmaster.com.ua/imgban ... 069000.png

Hi,
K/L/M are normally not that much worn down because there is only very little movement.
"J" is important and you should replace it. You can buy it at TK-Carparts.de: 251711207

On my linkage it looks like "M" is still visible, so maybe yes those are still OK. I guess in the process of replacing "J" I will have to disassemble the other parts and then have a look at KLM (not the airline! :D ).

Hey, maybe I have good luck! On the Polish forum a guy told me that MEYLE makes a set containing all these bushings (MEYLE 1001420009)
Can you guys tell me if it looks like all of these bushings: J, K, L, & M are contained here?

Hi,
most things should be available at TK-carparts.
This is a link to 5-speed parts from 1983 and later but there is stuff for 4-speed and pre-83 models available as well.

But TK is in Germany and shipping and duty to Czech is very expensive. I found this set in Czech for only 7 euro! ...but I am not 100% sure it contains the exact bushings I need J K L M ?Jens Brownstar hat geschrieben:Hi,

Sending from Germany to Czech will cause shipping cost only, no duty, customs or taxes - one of the great advantages of the EC.

As far as i can see, J is not included in the package.
And most of the parts are not used in a bus, but in golf/vento etc.

OUCH! ...do you think the others are there? KLM? ...anyway I ordered it - 7 eur incl shipping > can't lose!yamsun hat geschrieben:As far as i can see, J is not included in the package.
I am not completely sure about that... we recently called the Czech Customs office and they said that duty is still sometimes charged. (of course, not on 20 euro). I have a good friend in the Post Office and she said that more than 25 euros there is duty charges. Anyway the situation changes all the time but I don't feel comfortable to order large things from Germany because of this. It is really a problem because I need to order a new turbo and maybe a new cylinder head ($$$$)... and I am afraid of some mega duty charges.neujoker hat geschrieben:Sending from Germany to Czech will cause shipping cost only, no duty, customs or taxes - one of the great advantages of the EC.
A friend advised me to NOT disassemble until I am sure I have the new bushings in my hands..... but... Max you are right that obviously the best thing to do is open it up. In fact I should also because I am fixing some body rust there also now.Max Power hat geschrieben:How about disassembling your linkage and see which parts you need ?
Can I ask a silly question??? HOW DO YOU SEPARATE THESE TWO RODS? I don't understand how to do this.
...I guess the way to do it is to disconnect both rods from the front and back, and then this central connection should just 'lift' apart, correct?

very cool! I think I understand it now... but the important thing is that I need to first MARK "F" very very well in order to be able to put it back together again in the same position. Do I only need to mark "F"? ...or any other spot?

Re: Shift-linkage central bushing (early diesel)
I removed the front 2 rods... I can't disconnect the two rods because I think bushings "K" and "L" are still good. Bushing "J" is still alive but almost dead...
My 6 eur set of bushings arrived this afternoon and it seems like none of them are correct. But the big orange one is very close to "J" so I put it on a lathe and tweeked it to the correct dimensions (hopefully :) ) I think it will be very good.
So I think I will not bother to do anything about "K" and "L".
But the rods are very rusty... should I do something about this??? ...or just leave them alone??
Thanks

At least I would give the rod a light polishing in the area where the bushing is sliding.

Maybe I will waste my time but I will grind off as much rust as I can without damaging the bushings, then paint all.Max Power hat geschrieben:At least I would give the rod a light polishing in the area where the bushing is sliding.
I think that bushing "K" (upper ball bushing) is in excellent condition, and it iseems that this bushing is extremely important - it is actually holding the two rods together ...I would like to separate the two rods to clean the rust properly and more easily, but I think that if I separate the rods then probably I can damage bushing "K"... so I won't risk it.
I can not find any part number for bushings "K" and "L"... so I won't risk breaking them.

Hi,
You can seperate the two rods easily by bending them. I did this with mine several times and never had problems with damaged bushings.
Just be a bit careful with that old stuff...

Really? And you had the old old 30 year original "K" bushing? I tried bending and it looked like it was about to come apart, but I would have needed quite some FORCE to do it > so I hesitated. Anyway I know that in the worst case I can make another "K" with some wonderful German material called TRESPA.yamsun hat geschrieben:Hi,

I guess that "K" is made with HARD plastic, and "J" is SOFT PLASTIC.

No, sorry, misunderstanding... i had the "before 1983" Version and completely changed the whole stuff to the "after 1983" Version.
The early version has three rods the late only two.
And the late version doesn't have K/L/M/J at all.

Well just now I managed to separate those two rods.... and yes, it is very very easy and nothing is going to break doing that. My K and L appear to be in excellent condition.... but I absolutely can't imagine HOW it is possible to put the K (upper ball bushing) on!!??? Is "K" in two parts?

Decided to risk it and separate the rods because I want to properly clean and paint them, and also at least change the "M" washers. The rods came apart very very easily just by bending at the joint until they separated. The "K" bushing seems almost new. I seriously wonder how the heck that thing is installed???
